Editorial Test Drive Review of Mahindra Xylo

Mahindra had launched the Xylo way back in 2009 and recently they launched a new version.  The Xylo now gets a front end very similar to the Genio pick-up and now looks much more appealing and pleasing to the eyes. The grille is new, the bonnet gels down in a more seamless manner and finally, the headlamps are changed to accommodate these new changes. The bumper gets a makeover and also gets chin rubber strips. Mahindra provides ABS as an option on the E4 and E8 version while the latter also gets air-bags as optional. The Xylo remains calm and composed during emergency braking manoeuvres.
Step inside the Xylo and you are greeted with surprises of the good kind. To start with, there is loads of space, much more than its own cousin, the Scorpio. The E9 version comes loaded to the brim and this is what we had for test with us. There are changes made to the cabin, for instance, the new two-tone color theme which looks premium. There is leather usage as well and can be seen on the seats, steering and gear shift lever. Doors gets a new trim, there is wooden finish on the console and a new floor console. And the moment you grab the steering, the controls for the audio system, voice activated commands and cruise control system greet you – yes, the E9 Xylo comes loaded with all these technologically advanced features and gizmos! The driver information display is right there in the centre while the 2nd row gets two dedicated snacks tray. All the rows get dedicated cup / bottle holders and air-con vents. Phew!  Yes, the new Xylo indeed comes loaded with features and makes every possible way of impressing you. The only thing that lets you down is the quality at places – for the example, the way the arm rests function is a bit flimsy.  The new Xylo now comes with an additional choice of engine – the 2.2-litre diesel motor picked up from the Scoprio. This engine is only available on the top end E9 model and needless to say, lends a completely different character to the Xylo. The E4 and E8 models continue to come with the same 112Bhp / 26Nm mEagle engine and the D2 and D2 models (intended for commercial usage) continue to come with the 2.5-litre mDI engine generated 95Bhp of power and 220Nm of torque. The ARAI ratings for the mEagle and mDi engines stand at 13kmpl and 14.95kmpl respectively.   Mahindra calls as Extra Stability Technology. The re-caliberated dampers and bushings for the suspension do make a world of difference, especially when you are going fast.  As far as comfort goes, the suspension does its job ably. There is a fair bit of suspension noise and when driven alone, you do tend to get thrown a bit over sharp undulations. But drive the Xylo with more than two people on board and suddenly, the suspension feels spot-on. Steering is a tad on the heavier side but the plus point is that at triple digit speeds, there is now a fair bit of feedback and you feel in control easily. The new Xylo range starts at Rs 7.33 lakh for the base D2 version in BS-III configuration. The BS-IV model costs Rs 7.47 lakh. The top end E9 with all the bells and whistles can be yours for Rs 10.47 lakh and for this, you get features that are unique to this segment.

Ford Fiesta Handling Braking & Safety

Launched in 2011, the new Fiesta is longer and wider than the current Classic version and has a longer wheelbase as well. This new Fiesta is also the first car from Ford to adhere completely to the Kinetic Design philosophy.  Its striking and the huge pulled back multi-element headlamps stand out. The grille is tight and thin with the huge air-dam below it. The rear three quarters of the Fiesta is smart with the only let down being the huge body area between the rear wheel and the tail-lamps. This is because by the time the design lines of the Kinetic philosophy reach the rear of the car ,  a lot of dead space ends up being created in the bottom half of the rear three quarters.
The Kinetic Design philosophy from the exterior is carried on to the insides as well. Within the first glance , you appreciate the whole look of the fascia and the console. There is a certain degree of aggression in the design lines here as well. For starters , the twin pod speedometer console looks terrific and also houses the driver information display for functions like distance to empty , fuel economy , average speed etc. The steering wheel has controls for various functions and also rest area for the thumbs. We loved the soft touch feel of the buttons and the same goes for the climate control and audio system too. The voice activation is done via the left stalk behind the steering and easy to get used to. In fact , this will be a selling point for the Fiesta. This new Fiesta will feel comfortable for four full sized adults , if not five! One of the biggest changes in the new Fiesta is its engines. The petrol motor is an all new advanced 1.5-litre Duratec motor that features twin independent variable camshaft timing technology or Ti-VCT. It displaces less capacity as compared to the current Fiesta but develops 9 extra horses , taking the maximum power to 110Bhp. It is also over 20% more fuel efficient and carries an ARAI certified fuel economy of 17kmpl! For diesel lovers , Ford has plonked in an all-new 1.5-litre motor in the Fiesta. This Duratorq inter-cooled and turbocharged diesel engine produces a massive 23 extra horses over the current Classic’s engine. Moreover , it is 17.5% more efficient with an ARAI certified fuel economy of 23.5! The diesel motor is a joy to drive both in city and out on the open highways.  Ford engineers have been talking a lot about the new EPAS or Electric Power Assist Steering. This basically replaces the conventional systems with hydraulic pumps that sap the engine of power. This new Fiesta is also the first ever Ford car to come with EPS (electronic power steering). The steering feel is impressive.  The ride quality is a little on the firmer side with only the driver on board but with four adults on board , it becomes perfect.  The Fiesta starts at 7.4 lakhs for base petrol to Rs 10.4 lakhs for top end automatic titanium. The Fiesta is well equipped and even base variants get air bags, ABS. Its a sporty and value sedan

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

The small car segment  the most important segment in the Indian car market, since the time the first car of that size, M800, was introduced here – and it is still available in most part of the country. The Maruti M800 is on offer in India for last 28 years (1984 to 2012). Over this period the company has sold over 2.5 million units, with one major update (1986) and lots of minor changes as and when needed. Though the car is phased out from metro cities due to unavailability of BSIV engine, it is still available in the rural areas where it is sold in meager numbers. Since May there are rumours that Maruti has stopped production of the M800, but the company has denied them time and again. Next is the Alto. The success graph for this car is even steeper with the Alto holding the best seller title for over a decade. However, with rising petrol prices and availability of options like the Hyundai Eon, Maruti’s grip on this segment is loosening. The solution was disclosed at the 2012 Auto Expo, without providing too many details. MSI MD, Nakanishi, confirmed that the company was considering a new car that will replace the M800 and the Alto in India, with up-to-date styling and technology. For a while it was believed that the Cervo will be the new Maruti small car for India. But then, our friends at OnCars snapped an all-new car from Maruti with minimal camouflage, divulging lot more about the company’s plans. The new car is called the Alto 800 and is expected to be launched in India during the coming festive season.

Acer Aspire One 725 Price in India – 11.6-inch Netbook

The new Acer Aspire One 725 is a 11.6-inch netbook powered by the AMD dual core C60 processor . It is the successor of the Acer Aspire One 722 netbook but is still powered by the same processor as its predecessor . The upgrades in the new netbook are latest Bluetooth module v4.0 and more memory (4GB) . While most of the computer manufacturing companies have stopped rolling out new netbooks , as many think they are outdated now due to availability of more portable , convinient and affordable price tablets , some companies like HP and Acer are still positive about the netbook market . I think the netbooks are still more reliable and powerful than the same or lower price tablets available in the market . The new Acer netbook is available in two colors of Volcanic Black and Caribbean Blue                 Acer Aspire One 725 Price in India : Rs.19,499

Chevrolet Sail

The Aveo U-VA did decentley in the Indian market but it lacked the features and style which its successor, the Sail U-VA has in bucketloads. One of the first products to come to the Indian market after the joining of General Motors and SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd will be the Sail hatchback. This premium hatchback was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi and when launched, will soon be followed by its sedan verison as well. It is also said that the Sail is the perfect replacement for the Aveo U-VA which has not been doing any good to the sales figures for the company. New and modern rivals like the Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20 and Toyota Etios Liva have taken charge of the segment completely.

The Sail however will change all that as it features a more modern looking design and a seems as a much better package as well. It easily overcomes the biggest shortcoming of the U-VA, ie, the looks. The Sail has a dual-port grille and looks handsome but it’s not futuristic looking, rather a safe design but something that will appeal to all.  As you can see from the pictures the Indian version has a strong dose of chrome to make it more up-market and it will work as we love chrome!  The interiors of the Sail look well- built and it offers enough space and good storage space. Expect features like  Bluetooth and USB to be offered. Moreover, it is a modern day car, engineered recently and this should reflect in the way it drives and pampers the passengers. It has ABS with EBD and airbags in the safety features department. For India as there are harsh summers, even the AC compressor has been upsized and that will be appreciated for sure. Overall the changed interior for India suits us a lot.

The Sail will be under 4 metres in length which means it will enjoy the tax benefits given out to small cars in India. On the engine front, the Sail will come with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine is is a 85 bhp 1.2-litre unit which fuel economy in the range of 18-19kmpl as per ARAI. The diesel engine is the now famous Fiat sourced 1.3-litre Multi-jet unit. The diesel develops a healthy 77 bhp at 4000rpm, it’s smooth and has good low-end grunt.
The model has been tuned and changed to suit the Indian market which will definitely appeal to the customers

The Sail U-VA has got the typical Chevy face. The split grille, new headlamp design and chrome finish to the grille with golden Chevrolet bowtie in the center gels in instantly with the entire GM range in India. The car has a prominent shoulder line and flared wheel arches that are distinctly visible from the side, while the rear looks interesting with basic design similar to that of the Fiat Punto but with lots of creases and individual design elements.

Chevrolet Sail U-VA

The Sail U-VA is the biggest diesel car in its segment. It can comfortably seat two six-footers and is also wide enough to seat three normal sized people in the rear seat. The interiors are all-beige – as in, including the top of the dash board, on all the variants. It makes the car look even roomier, but it is certain to be a bit of an obstruction in driving. The plastic and upholstery quality is not the best in segment, nor is it ergonomically designed with centralized power window switches behind gear lever and horn that works only if press is applied to the steering wheel.

Chevrolet Sail U-VA

GM calls their new diesel engine ‘Smartech’ SDE (Small Diesel Engine), which is essentially the 1.3-litre Fiat Multiijet, which powers almost a dozen cars in India, including its direct competitors. The power ratings are marginally different compared to those of the Swift and the Vista at 78bhp and 205Nm of torque. The company claims respectable ARAI fuel efficiency of 22.1kpl. The petrol engine is the same from the Beat called, the S-Tec, it is tuned to produce 86bhp and 113Nm, withARAI fuel efficiency of18.2kpl. The Sail U-VA is set up for ride comfort over handling, still can cruise comfortably at triple-digit speeds. The first ride report confirms that it is one of the best ride/handling compromises we've come across in the segment.
The Chevrolet Sail competes directly with the Suzuki Swift, Volkswagen Polo, Renault Pulse and Honda Jazz. However, we are expecting GM to price it a marginally lower (with all the cost cutting) than the competitors. The petrol base variant is expected to cost somewhere around Rs 4.5 lakh, while the diesel top-end should cost about Rs 6.8 lakh.

Microsoft releases Windows Phone 8 Companion appMicrosoft releases Windows Phone 8 Companion app

Microsoft had long discontinued their Zune Music Player, but the desktop software for the same became the iTunes counterpart for syncing to Windows Phone 7 devices. However, for the newerWindows Phones 8 coming out, the desktop software has been made redundant.
The Companion app should be able to do everything the Zune Desktop does, but without being a separate software as such. Unfortunately, just like the existing Windows Phone 7 devices won’t be upgraded to the Windows Phone 8 OS, the Companion app too is only compatible with the new phones and won’t work with Windows Phone 7 (or 7.5 or 7.8).
Microsoft has been garnering a lot of attention lately, with their new OS Windows 8 and Surface RT being officially launched. The next wave of products from the Redmond Company is the Windows Phone 8, which would complete the Windows 8 family of products.
Phone makers like Nokia, HTC and Samsung have already announced their Windows Phone 8. While HTC and Samsung’s stake in the Windows Phone 8 devices isn’t that crucial, Nokia’s future entirely banks of the success of the new phones are an instant hit with the people.
You can get the Companion app here.

iphone5

Thin, sleek and very capable.

It’s hard to believe a phone so thin could offer so many features: a larger display, a faster chip, the latest wireless technology, an 8MP iSight camera and more. All in a beautiful aluminium body designed and made with an unprecedented level of precision. iPhone 5 measures a mere 7.6 millimetres thin and weighs just 112 grams.1That’s 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than iPhone 4S. The only way to achieve a design like this is by relentlessly considering (and reconsidering) every single detail — including the details you don’t see.
